Historical Engineering
GCA actively support and promote the core principles and best practice in conservation, restoration and historic building repair work by using sympathetic structural techniques. When a structural appraisal identifies a significant weakness or deficiency in load bearing capacity, sympathetic strengthening repairs can be prescribed that meet the stringent criteria often set by regulatory bodies.
It is often necessary to balance modern comfort standards with old frail structural elements and worn fabric found in listed buildings. We can also offer advice on change of use.
We have been involved in several important heritage projects in recent years, some of which have received notable awards:
- 2002: GCA (UK) Ltd received a Highly Commended Certificate in the Best Design and Supervision category of the Design Construction Awards 2001/2002, for work carried out on Harston Rock Tramway Bridge (pictured above), from Staffordshire Moorlands / SRB Partnership.
- 2002: GCA (UK) Ltd. received the Institution of Structural Engineers, Midland Counties, Structural Awards, Structural Bridge Award for the sensitive design works associated with the improvements to the historic Tramway Bridges at Froghall on behalf of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.
